Sunrise From Indigo
Beautiful Thing: Lance
By Mariah

It's the middle of the afternoon but it's so dark out. It's been raining all day. I think I've got cabin fever. No, I know I have cabin fever. I've cleaned every inch of this house. I've done laundry and dishes. I wish I could go out and mow the lawn. You left a few hours ago to pick up some groceries and takeout food. We probably could have just cooked. It would have given me more dishes to clean.

I should've gone with you. I could have gotten out of the house at least. It's too late to make that decision now. Hopefully you'll be home soon. I'm getting a little worried. I'm sure you're just driving cautiously so it's taking you a little longer.

Thunder rumbles against the side of the house. I just want you to come home. I've had enough of this weather. I should have made you stay here. We could have found something to make. We didn't need milk yet. We didn't need takeout.

The lights dim for a split second but then they are back on. If the power goes out, I might go crazy. The walls are already closing in around me. Ten more minutes and I'm going to the garage. If you're stuck somewhere on the side of the road, I need to be the one to get you home.

I'll wait ten more minutes. The glass is cool against my forehead and my breath leaves an opaque circle on the window. Rain drizzles down and I can barely even see the pool. It must be a bitch to drive in. You'll be home soon though.

The doorbell is not what I'm expecting but when I open the door, you're on the porch. "Joe?"

"Couldn't find my garage door opener."

"Oh, I'm sorry. I would have opened it for you if I'd known you were home."

"It's okay, just help me with these, okay? I grabbed all of the things that needed to come in now."

It's only a few bags but they're heavy and I don't know how you got them all to the door. I really just want to grab a towel and wrap you in it but I can tell there's ice cream in one of the bags I'm carrying.

I put away the ice cream and the few frozen things you picked up. The towel I want is in the downstairs bathroom. You're putting away some boxes of cereal when I make it back into the kitchen. You're cold and I should have gotten the towel earlier but at least I have it now.

"Thanks."

"You're welcome. You're so cold." I have to wrap my arms around you because I can feel you shiver a little.

"I'll be okay. I just need to go change."

That definitely makes me smile. "I'll help."

"Here in the kitchen?"

"Why not? You've been naked in the kitchen before."

"Yes, I have."

"So, why not again?"

"Aren't we going to eat?"

The lights flicker again with a flash of lightening but this time I'm not ready to climb the walls. "Oh fine, we can eat first. For you, I'll wait."

"Gee, thanks." Your grin is enough to keep me warm on the inside.
